Decarbonization of Ukraine's Cement Industry: Challenges and Opportunities

Organisers: DiXi Group, Green Transition Office

Format: online

Join the online discussion where the Green Transition Office will present the results of a sectoral study on the potential and cost of greenhouse gas emission reductions in Ukraine's cement industry.

Ukraine's cement industry is one of the foundational sectors ensuring the country's economic and infrastructure development, and it will play a crucial role in post-war reconstruction.

At the same time, it is one of the most carbon-intensive industries. With the strengthening of carbon regulation in global markets, the implementation of CBAM, and the future launch of the Emissions Trading System (ETS) in Ukraine, the financial burden from carbon payments and projected demand shifts toward products with lower carbon footprints will create serious challenges for domestic cement producers.

Expected deferrals from carbon obligations will help mitigate financial and market pressure, but will be temporary in nature and cannot be considered a long-term business development strategy.

What will the event speakers and participants discuss?

  • National carbon budget — what share of greenhouse gas emissions does Ukraine's cement industry create?

  • What decarbonization approaches and strategies do leading global industry players have?

  • How is it advisable to ensure deep decarbonization of Ukraine's cement industry? Which technologies will provide the most effective greenhouse gas emission reductions and how much could this cost? Under what conditions will these technologies be profitable

  • What contribution can each technology make to reducing the base for calculating CBAM and ETS payments?

The event format includes an interactive Q&A session where you can ask your questions to industry experts and participate in forming recommendations for climate-neutral development policy of the cement sector. The event will bring together representatives of relevant ministries, international financial institutions, business associations, industry experts, and specialists in decarbonization and climate change.
