Just Transition and Reconstruction Under the Conditions of the Ongoing War

Organisers: Centre for Environmental Initiatives “Ecoaction”, Luhansk Regional Human Rights Centre “Alternative”

Format: hybrid (online and in person)

With the full-scale war ongoing, Ukraine’s coal communities are facing vastly different challenges. Some are evacuating and defending every inch of their land, planning for a post-deoccupation future, while others, closer to the front, are dealing with survival and recovery concerns. Meanwhile, rearward coal communities are actively planning for a just transition, serving as an example for future transformation for others.

Amid these challenges, it is crucial to sustain dialogue and cooperation among coal communities, civil society organizations, and national representatives to align on urgent issues, shared priorities, and joint action. Now more than ever, it is essential to support coal communities in their unique struggles and jointly identify paths for both short—and long-term strategies regarding just transition in wartime, recovery, and EU integration.

Participants of the just transition process are invited to actively engage in discussions and cooperation.
